The following list includes pre-college classes at local institutions, which are recommended for students interested in applying to a college of art and design in order to further test your interest and build your portfolio. Many of these programs are free or have scholarships available. Please note that these programs are not affiliated with Parsons.

Programs

The ACE Mentor Program of Greater New York, a not-for-profit organization, helps prepare high school students for careers in design and construction. The fastest-growing mentoring program in the building industry, ACE operates in 43 states and 226 cities across the nation and is open to any high school student interested in learning more about a career in the integrated construction industry (including engineers of all types, architects, landscape architects, and contractors) to discover which area might be right for you.

Art Directors’ Club

Every semester since 1997, ADC along with the School Art League and New York Board of Education offers a series of Saturday Career Workshops to 50 talented high school juniors from all five boroughs of New York City. Each week, a leading professional discusses his or her career and background and oversees a creative project that allows the students to apply their skills in new ways. These projects help them build competitive portfolios for art school applications.

Bronx River Art Center

A variety of classes for teens including drawing, painting, digital photography, printmaking, illustration, graphic design, and portfolio prep. Brooklyn Museum of Art

Studio classes and a variety of Internships available for teens. Classes include instruction in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media in order to develop skills in viewing and creating art. Participants explore the Museum's renowned collections, discover new art materials, and create their own works of art inspired by the galleries. At the conclusion of each semester, there is a 2–3 month exhibition of the students' work in the Museum's Con Edison Education Gallery.Courses do not have any prerequisites. All levels of experience are welcome.A very limited number of Gallery/Studio scholarships are available for students ages 6–17. Application deadline is February 3.

TEEN COUNCIL: The Bronx Museum Teen Council is a diverse group of area high school students working collaboratively with the Bronx Museum, producing a podcast and zine, exploring, showcasing, and contributing to the culture of the Bronx. Held in conjunction with the school year,

The Career Internship Network (CIN), a program of the Youth Development Institute of the Tides Center, comprises thirty New York City institutions with established internship programs that provide adolescents with direct experience and understanding of careers.Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education ArtWorks Summer Internships provide a platform for youth development and self-sufficiency through paid employment in the arts. Each summer we bring together a group of high school and middle school students to work on real world, commissioned visual arts and design projects. High School Portfolio Development Workshop brings together groups of high school sophomores and juniors to participate in an intensive three weeklong portfolio development workshop lead by Casita Maria teaching artists.

The goal of College Now is to help students meet high school graduation requirements and prepare for success in college, both academically and socially. In addition, program administrators have designed program activities with the goal of enhancing performance on Regents and CUNY placement exams so that students will be able to enroll in college without the need for remediation. College credit offerings range from courses in the arts and humanities, social sciences, math, and technology. A variety of pre-college courses are available for students not yet ready to take college-credit courses and some are offered for high school credit. DICE Design Initiative for Community Empowerment (at Pratt Institute)

DICE is an after-school program that offers high school students an introduction to design through studio work, tours of design studios, public exhibitions and visits from accomplished designers. Through classes in Fashion Design, Product Design and Graphic Design, DICE introduces local youth to career and advanced educational opportunities in design and to prepare them to pursue these opportunities through a creative and rigorous design education program.

The Fashion Institute of Technology has courses available for Middle and High School students interested in Art, Design, Business and Technology, and Portfolio Development. These courses which are taught by FIT professors are both credit and noncredit, and some are also available online.High School Workshops introduce students to the courses taught at FIT, The Live programs offered in the Spring, Summer and Fall semesters are taught by FIT professors, these classes give students insight in to the fields they may want to go in to. The High School Credit courses prepare students to engage their communities in dialogue about their environment by strengthening their skills in humanities, critical thinking and communication.

Global Kids Xpressions

GK students learn how creativity and artistic expression inform others about serious issues and effect real change in their communities and in the world by participating in Global Kids Creative Arts programs for Collective Action. Xpressions works with teens interested in exploring the role of media and the arts for social change. The program combines multimedia strategies and leadership development to empower youth to become critical thinkers, art/media producers, and global citizens. Harlem School of the Arts

The curriculum includes classes in a full spectrum of media including digital art, drawing, filmmaking, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture, taught by a faculty of world-class professional artists and guest lecturers. Beyond the curriculum, HSA seeks to cultivate an appreciation of the arts within the Harlem community by presenting guest artists and faculty exhibitions open to the public. Metropolitan Museum of Art 

The Metropolitan Museum offers free art classes and programs for High School students age 11-16. The classes offered by the MMA include art workshops, seminar style courses with other NYC High school students. The art workshops include a Portfolio Class for teens age 12-14. The Drawing Academy for teens age 15-18. Saturday Sketching for teens age 11-18 and Drop in Drawing Session for all ages. Along with the classes, Internships are offered as well.

School of Visual Arts Pre-College Programs

SVA's Pre-College Program is designed for high school students who want to enhance their creative skills, learn more about a particular field of art, develop a portfolio, and/or experience the challenges and triumphs that exist at one of the most dynamic colleges. In courses taught by the same faculty of leading art professionals who teach in the undergraduate degree program of the college, students will explore the fundamentals of art & design at a level not readily available in high school. The Studio Museum in Harlem:

The Studio Museum is dedicated to creating a safe environment for teens to express themselves creatively. The Museum offers free programs for students outside of the school environment. The programs offer students the opportunity to meet and converse with prominent visual artists, express their ideas in discussions, facilitate tours and hands on workshops, and develop important communication and critical thinking skills.Expanding the Walls: Making Connections Between Photography, History and Community is an eight-month photography-based program for a select group of students enrolled in a high school or GED program. The Summer Arts Institute is a tuition-free, intensive, four-week arts program for New York City public school students entering grades 8-12, held at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School in Astoria, Queens.Students can major in dance, theater, instrumental music (band), vocal music, film, photography or visual arts. The program is designed for students at an intermediate or advanced level of study in their chosen discipline.

Whitney Museum Youth Insights

The YI Artists program brings teens together with contemporary artists, providing opportunities to work collaboratively, discuss art critically, think creatively, and make art inspired by this exchange. Youth Insights currently offers programs in art and writing-- both are free, semester-long after-school programs each spring and fall for 10th through 12th grade New York City high school students. Graduates of these programs are eligible to participate in internships and summer intensive programs.
