NAACP ACT-SO

New York City Academic, Cultural, Technological, & Scientific Olympics

A competition for 9th-12th graders of African American or Latino/Hispanic descent.  Categories available in Visual Arts, as well as Performing Arts, Sciences, Humanities and Business.  Awards are cash prizes, scholarships, laptops and certificates.  The NAACP ACT-SO mission iis to overcome the vicious cycle of low scholastic expectations and achievement that plagues Black underserved minority youth throughout New York City; to strengthen Black high school students’ academic skills and inspire the confidence they will need to succeed as adults; and, to offer individualized academic mentorship and diverse enrichment activities, of which there is short supply in the New York City public high schools.

National Portfolio Day

National Portfolio Day is an annual event that provides an opportunity for those who wish to pursue an education in the visual arts and design to meet with representatives from colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.  Representatives will be available to review your artwork and give you feedback before you officially apply to college while discussing their programs and answering questions about professional careers in art.  High school students, parents, teachers, guidance counselors and college transfer students are encouraged to attend.  All Portfolio Day events are free, open to the public and do not require pre-registration.  You do not have to wait until senior year to attend! The NPD website contains a list of art and design-related majors with colleges & universities where they are offered.
